Barten, Norbert C. (30 May 1918 - 2 September 2012)

Norbert Barten, 94, of Granton died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at the Golden Living Center-Three Oaks Nursing Home in Marshfield.

Norbert was born May 30, 1918, in Browns Valley, MN, the son of Anton and Anna (Keyser) Barten. He attended grade school in Clark County and DePere and one year of high school in Eau Claire. He then worked for three years in plumbing and did sheet metal work in Omro. Later, he worked for three years at Weyerhauser in Marshfield. He was united in marriage to Marcella Rosandich Aug. 29, 1942, in Bakerville. They farmed first in the Heathville area, northwest of Chili, and from 1949 they farmed in the Town of York. They retired from farming in 1981 and in 2010 Norbert moved to the Neillsville Retirement Community.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville and enjoyed fishing, playing cards, especially sheepshead and hunting. For many years, Norb and Mary enjoyed wintering in Arizona.

He is survived by three children, George “Buddy” (Bonnie) Barten of Wisconsin Rapids, Nancy (Darrell) Buettner of Sun Prairie and Patricia “Pat” (Jerry) Jensen of Chilton; seven grandchildren, Todd Barten, Lynette Schauer, Scott Buettner, Robert Buettner, Michael Buettner, Bethany Wiskow and Daniel Jensen; and two sisters, Lucille Schmidt of Marshfield and Mary Ann (Harvin) Abrahmson of Milwaukee.

Norbert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2006; his parents; three brothers, George, John and Edward; and three sisters, Ethel, Leona and Roberta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville. The celebrant will be Fr. Varkey F. Joseph. Music will be provided by soloist Megan Schauer, organist Ronald Resong and St. Mary’s Choir. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Neillsville. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Casketbearers are: Dan Jensen, Mickey Wiskow, Todd Barten, Scott Buettner, Robert Buettner and Michael Buettner.
