Lindquist, Russell J. (16 MAY 1904 - 28 JUL 1962)

Russell J. Lindquist, 56, a former Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) resident, suffered a stroke at his home in Menasha, Wis. Friday morning, July 27 and passed away at the Theda Clark Hospital at Neenah, Wis., Saturday, July 28th, 1962 without regaining consciousness.

Russell was one of a family of 12 children, six boys and six girls, born to Mr. and Mrs. Eph. Lindquist. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald in 1922, Laurence in 1957, and two sisters, Jennie in 1956 and Ella on July 8, 1962. He was born May 16, 1904 at Thorp.

Russell graduated with honors from the Thorp High School in 1920 and then attended the Eau Claire State Teachers College. After graduating he went to Hardin, Mont., where he taught school for twelve years. He served as a Lieutenant from 1942 to 1945 in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge, he, with his brothers, Laurence and Durward, were engaged as building contractors at Menasha, Wis., until 1960. At that time Russell resumed his teaching profession, taught in Menasha one year and did substitute teaching the past year in Neenah, Menasha and Appleton. He was attending the Summer Session for teachers at Oshkosh State College this summer and had contracted to teach at the Elkhart Lake, Wis. School this coming years. He was never married.

His untimely death was a great shock to his family and many friends of the Thorp Community.

He is survived by three brothers, Charles Lindquist of Colusa, Calif., Durward of Menasha and Kenneth E. Lindquist of Thorp; four sisters, Esther, Mrs. F.G. Holstein of Stevens Point, Ruth, Mrs. W.R. Schoen of Green Bay, Lorraine Lindquist of Chicago and Minnie, Mrs. Chester Johnson of Thorp.

The body of the deceased lay in state at Brown’s Funeral Home in Menasha until Tuesday morning when it was brought to the Thorp Funeral Home here and funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Scott, assisted by Seminarian Joe Lewandowski, in the Chapel. Burial was made in the East Thorp Cemetery where military rites were conducted by Cecil Tormey Post No. 118 of the Thorp American Legion, in charge of Commander Cyril Alger and Chaplain Harry Badzinski, followed by a salute by the firing squad and the sounding of taps. Pallbearers were Gust Yahn, James Biddle, R. James Tolford, Russell, Mead, Wm. S. Wagner and Wm. Ramer.
