WITHEE - More than $100,000 has been donated to the Ammon and Ellen Sauder family, rural Withee, and a new batch of mail that came this morning has yet to be opened.

Leon Bruchert, president of the State Bank of Withee, which is coordinating the donations, said today that the contributions have exceeded $100,000. He added the family may start building a new house this week "if we can get everything coordinated."

The average amount donated, Bruchert said, has been $20-$25, most of it in forms of checks. One family has donated $1,000, which is the largest amount received at the Withee Bank.

And, he said, even children are getting into the act.

"We had one young girl, age 9, who drew a picture of a Care Bears, and she wrote on the bottom, "Care Bear Cares," and enclosed $2," Bruchert said. "Other letters have come in saying that the children have given up their allowances for a couple of weeks or a month, and that (allowance) money was sent in addition to their parent's donation.

"one family wrote in and said its 6-year -old son felt he should do something for the children too, and they sent an additional donation," he added.

The Money received has been set up for the Sauders in an account. Bruchert said. The cards and letters will be delivered to the family "once this thing slows down a little," he said. "I don't think they're quite ready for it yet."

Bruchert added, however, that the Sauder family has received quite a bit of cards and letters in their own mail.

Meanwhile, a benefit dance in Neillsville Tuesday evening netted an additional $525, according to dance arrangers.

Some 200 persons attended the dance, and personnel from the First National Bank in Neillsville assisted in collecting the funds.

Donations have continued to pour in since the Sauders lost five of their nine children and their home and possessions in a house fire on December 20. Truckloads of clothing, furniture and household items are being stores for the family. A mobile home has been donated for the Sauders use until a new house can be completed.

NEILLSVILLE - For the second consecutive year the Neillsville Area Chamber of Commerce, with the cooperation of the Neillsville Police Department, has presented gift packages to out-of-state motorists as they passed thru Neillsville the day before Christmas.

Police Chief Tom Woods said the program was "Extremely successful," and that there were a lot of happy people because of it.

Woods said 25 cars were stopped by himself and Officer Beryl Buddenhagen as they passed through the city. They quickly informed the motorists they have done nothing wrong and that they were presenting a gift on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce.

The package contained a number of items including Wisconsin cheese. Also attached was a signed letter from Mayor Bob Lulloff.

Woods said there was usually a look of anxiety on the faces of the motorists when stopped, but that quickly changed when the gift package was presented.
