Schwantes, Fred (22 MAR 1866 – 25 AUG 1942)

Fred Schwantes, one of the better known residents of this community, died Tuesday morning, August 25, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Toltzman, Loyal, Wis., at the age of 76 years. He was born March 22, 1866, in Germany and came to this country at the age of seven with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schwantes. He and his parents settled in Xonia near Watertown, Wis. At the age of 14 years Mr. Schwantes came with his parents to Spencer where he had lived the remainder of his life. In October, 1894 he was united in marriage to Walborg Olson. They moved on a 80 acre farm where they lived 28 years. Ten years ago he purchased property in the village of Spencer where they moved. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church in the village.

Mr. Schwantes was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Marshfield July 1, 1942, and as he could not recover his daughter, Mrs. Albert Toltzman took him in her home, and with the aid of a nurse, cared for him until his death. His wife preceded him in death six years ago. He leaves to mourn his death, his daughter Mrs. Albert Toltzman of Loyal, and four grandchildren, Fred and Irene Toltzman of Wausau and Gertrude and Ruth at home. He also leaves three sisters, Louise Rindfleisch of Jefferson; Mrs. Anna Monthe and Martha Rindflesch, town of Brighton; two brothers, Herman Schwantes, town of Brighton and Charles Schwantes, Minneapolis, Minn. Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

The body of Mr. Schwantes was taken to the Coop. Funeral home in Marshfield and was taken to the home in Spencer Friday morning. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 1:45 o’clock at the home and at 2:00 o’clock at the Trinity Lutheran church in Spencer, the Rev. Stapel officiating. Burial was made in the North church cemetery beside the grave of his wife.

The flower girls were Colleen and Patsy Copet, Ruth, Irene and Gertrude Toltzman, Joyce Monthe and Hilda Rindfleisch. Pall bearers were Fred Toltzman, Art Schwantes, Wm. Rindfleisch, Martin and Alfred Griepentrog and Erwin Rindfleisch.
