Heinrich Augustus & Margaret (Laux) Winter

Greenwood, Warner Twp., Clark Co., Wisconsin

     Margaret   &    Heinrich

Heinrich Augustus Winter was born in Brake (near Lemgo), Lippe-Detmold, Germany, on January 21, 1826.  He was the son of Jobst & Sophie (Faulke) Winter.  Census records indicate that he came to the USA in 1846. In various records, his name is recorded as Augustus Winter, Aug Winter, H. A. Winter, and Henry A. Winter.  Henry became a minister, and was affiliated with the German Reformed (Presbyterian) Church.

Henry married Margaretha "Margaret" Laux, daughter of ? and Barbara (Waldburger) Laux, on December 6, 1853, in Marion, Marion County, Ohio.  Margaret was born in Leimen, Baden, Germany, in 1836 or 1835 (1900 Census shows November 1835).  Soon after their marriage, the couple moved to Wisconsin where all ten of their children were born.  Around 1875, the family settled in Madison, Wisconsin, where Henry and Margaret lived the rest of their lives.  Margaret died on August 24, 1905, and Henry passed away March 2, 1907.

Necrology 1907

Wisconsin Historical Soceity:

Rev. Henry A. Winter, H. R., the oldest member of our presbytery, died quite suddenly at his home in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday afternoon, March 2d, 1907 of apoplexy.  He was born in Northern Germany in the year 1826 and studied as a youth at the gymnasium in the town of Lemgo Lippe, Detmold.  Coming to the United States in 1846, he lived an artisan life in St. Louis three years, then resumed his studies in Mercerburg, Franklin county, Penn., remaining there two years.  He then spent about a year at Heidelberg Theological School, Tiffin, Ohio, and in 1852 became its first graduate, being at the same time or near that time, ordained to the gospel ministry.  Rev. Mr. Winter’s first official work was in a missionary field of the Indian Reserve, Ohio.  In the Fall of 1853 he was married to Miss Margaret Laux of Sandusky, Ohio, who continued his faithful companion through fifty-three years of married life, until they were separated by her death a year and a half ago.  Immediately after his marriage Mr. Winter came to Wisconsin and has been a resident of this state during all the fifty-four years since.  He has founded twelve churches mostly German Presbyterian, and served six other fields.  For some twenty-seven years he was pastor of the German Presbyterian church of Madison, Wisconsin, in the building, which with some modification still stands in its original location.  It was built in 1846 and was the first church building erected for that purpose, in Madison.  Mr. Winter continued in more or less active ministerial service until his seventy-fifth year, about six years ago, when he was honorably retired and has lived with physical good health ever since in his Madison home.  Even at the last he was not ill but was just called away.  He leaves two daughters and six sons.  At his funeral service, conducted March 4th by Rev. George F. Hunt of Christ Church and Rev. A. C. Kroeche, German Presbyterian pastor, five sons of Mr. Winter and a grandson acted as pallbearers.  He was a good, faithful man and minister of the gospel of Christ.
