Edward & Amanda Smith

Eaton, Clark, Wisconsin

 

Edward Smith was a sailor who was born in 1830 in England.  He came to the United States in infancy with his parents.  Beginning as cabin boy, on the great lakes, he rose to the rank of captain, and was captain of thirteen vessels.  His wife, Amanda was seven years younger and born in Vermont.  They had a daughter, Amy, and three sons: Walter, Edward, Jr. and Mildred.   Coming to Clark County in 1879 he settle at Christie, and the next year moved to Greenwood. In 1881 he moved to Longwood, where he ran a hotel.   He then went to Withee, where he lived in retirement.  He died January 29, 1907 after only a few hours of illness.  He was a familiar face in Clark County.
