Kauffman, Alvin Jr. (4 November 1949 - 31 October 1981)

LOYAL -- One person was killed and another injured in a ditch cave-in Saturday in the Clark County town of Sherman.

Dead is Alvin Kauffman Jr., 31, Route 1 Loyal, on whose farm the accident took place. He was pronounced dead on Arrival Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield.

A neighbor, Emery Beachy, about 30, Route 2, Spencer, was treated for cuts and a knee injury at St. Joseph's Hospital and released.

According to Clark County authorities, the two men were in the ditch about eight feet deep when the side caved in. Dirt fell first on Beachy, and when Kauffman moved toward him to help, more dirt fell and both men were buried.

Both men were completely covered, with Kauffman in a standing position. Beachy, however, was bent forward, and he benefited apparently from an air pocket below him.

A family member called for the Spencer Fire Department and its rescue equipment. Firefighters freed both men using earth moving equipment at the scene.

The two had been working in a trench in which they were laying piping for a manure pit.

Services for Mr. Kauffman will be Wednesday at the Spencer Amish Church with sermons by Bishop Nelson Garber and Bishop Glen Bender. Burial will follow in the Amish Cemetery (Spencer Mennonite Cemetery).

Mr. Kauffman was born November 4, 1949 in Virginia to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin (Annie Zook) Kauffman. His marriage to Darlin Marner took place in 1970 in Ontario, Canada, and she survives. He farmed throughout his life. He was a member of the Amish Church.

Other survivors include two sons, Allan and Phillip, and two daughters, Lydia Mae and Edna Sue, all at home; his parents of Dover, Delaware, six sisters and five brothers.
