MARVELENE BUTTERBRODT


Marvelene Butterbrodt, 73, Loyal, Clark County, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1992, at her home.


Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 1992, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Globe. Rev. Paul Reede officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. Roger Buchholz, soloist, and Mrs. Judy Bobrofsky, organist. Burial was in the Neillsville Cemetery.


Pallbearers were David Ayer, Daniel Meyer, James Koski, DuWayne Mews, David Miskulin, and Scott Schultz.


Marvelene Duege was born Feb. 8, 1919, in Neillsville, to William and Elsie (nee Knoop) Duege.


She attended a one-room schoolhouse as a child and graduated from Neillsville High School in 1937. She then attended a one-year city normal school and taught for a short time before attending the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire from 1939 1941. She was married to Clarence Butterbrodt Nov. 1, 1948. They later divorced. Following graduation from college, she taught in a number of places, including Humbird, Elkhorn, Beaver Dam, Randolph and Greenwood. She later moved to Loyal and taught English and journalism at Loyal High School for more than 30 years until retiring in 1991. She also acted as the school's newspaper advisor. She was affectionately known as Mrs. B. by her students and friends.


She was runner-up for the state Teacher of the Year award in 1988. She was honored by the Wisconsin Chippewa Valley School Press Association in 1989 by having the annual Advisor of the Year award named after her. She received an award of merit from editors of Wisconsin's daily newspapers in 1990 and had received other awards for her work with the Wisconsin-Chippewa Valley School Press Association. She was recognized in 1989 by the Loyal Chamber of Commerce as the city's Outstanding Citizen . She had been active in the American Legion Oratorical Contest and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy Contest. She had also directed the Clark County 4-H drama contest and served as a judge for about 20 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Alan (Jacqueline) Main, Dubuque, Iowa and one son, John, of Cadott one brother, Louis Duege, Fairchild and seven grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents.


Rinka Funeral Home handled the arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Marvelene Butterbrodt Scholarship Fund.
