JOSEPH BERTZ, SR. PASSES AWAY


Joseph Bertz
was born in Rubicon, Oct. 4, 1865 and came to the Township of Loyal, Clark County 44 years ago. He was married April 7, 1890 to Mary Bruce of Hartford. Mr. Bertz held many town offices and was a director of the Citizens State Bank of Loyal since its organization, until several years ago, when his eyesight began to fail.


For the past 35 years Mr. Bertz has been a livestock dealer in Clark County and was well known in Greenwood and vicinity. For the past 14 years he has resided in the Village of Loyal.


Mr. Bertz passed away at 11:48 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 1939, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, where he had been a patient since March 4th.


A solemn requiem high mass was read Monday morning, April 10th at 9 o'clock at St. Anthony's Catholic Church at Loyal, Rev. Aloys Zinthefer officiated, with Rev. Chas. Brady of Abbotsford as Deacon and Rev. John Novak of Greenwood as Sub-Deacon. The body was laid to rest in the Loyal Catholic Cemetery.


He is survived by his wife, five daughters, Mrs. T. H. Slone (Frances), Mrs. Robert Eggerstead (Evelyn) of Chicago Mrs. Frank Mittehenselter (Harriet), Danville, Ill. Mrs. Alfred Haas (Alice), Loyal Mrs. Robert Strathmann (Gwendolyn), Colvy and seven sons, Edward, Joseph Jr., Reuben, Leo, Harold, John and Jerome, all of Loyal, also 25 grandchildren.
