EDWARD H. UPHAM

Edward Herbert Upham, whose death was mentioned last week, was born in Southbridge, Mass., Sept. 19, 1851, and died Feb. 18, 1908, making his age at the time of his death 56 years, 4 months and 29 days. He was one of a family of four boys. The family, except the father, who died in Massachussetts, came to Wisconsin in the early 1880's and located at Marshfield.

In May 1890, Mr. Upham was married to Fanny Tracy Prouty at Rolling Prairie, Wis.

Mr. Upham worked in a flour mill in Ripon for two years, but has been a railroad man most of the time he has been in Wisconsin, having been in the employ of the Wisconsin Central for over twenty years.

Mr. Upham and his family have lived in Marshfield, Ashland and Chippewa Falls during his service on different divisions and have lived in Greenwood, Clark County for nine years past, while Mr. Upham ran the engine on the branch.

The Marshfield Times in speaking of deceased says: Mr. Upham was for many years a resident of Marshfield, one of the sterling men of the town in the pioneer days of its existence. He served on the common council for several terms and was energetic and public spirited in his work for the advancement of the city. Eminently fair and liberal in all his dealings, Mr. Upham won a host of friends here.

The funeral was held at the Upham home last Thursday afternoon, the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member, having charge of the service. Rev. W. T. Hendren preached a short sermon. The remains were taken to Juneau, Wis. for burial. At Marshfield the body lay in the undertaking rooms during the interval between the arrival of the Central train and the departure of the Northwestern train. The Masonic lodge had charge at Marshfield and at Juneau, a Masonic burial service being held at the latter place.

George and Everett Upham of Marshfield, brothers of deceased, Mrs. Lamphear of Juneau and Miss Bessie Tracy of Rochester, Minn., sisters of Mrs. Upham, were present at the funeral. Mr. Lamphear was here but had to return to Juneau before the funeral.

Mr. Upham is survived by his wife and daughter and by three brothers, Everett and George, living in Marshfield, and William, living in Washington, D.C., the latter not being able to be present at the funeral.
