PETER H. SCHMIDT COMMITS SUICIDE


Peter Hanson Schmidt, 78, committed suicide at 9:20 a.m. on Monday Oct. 6, 1941 at the home of his son Hans Schmidt in the Town of Hendren, Clark County. He has been in ill health and was very despondent.


Mr. Schmidt killed himself by tying one end of a rope around a barn timber and the other around his neck. He then aimed the shotgun at his face and discharged it with a short rope. His son found him after he heard the shot.


Mr. Schmidt was born in Denmark on Dec. 22, 1862 and came to this country in 1882 and settled in Sabula, Iowa. In 1913 he moved to Fairchild and in 1920 came to Willard. He retired from farming in 1929. Mrs. Schmidt passed away in 1929.


He is survived by two sons, Harry of Milwaukee and Hans of Willard and 9 grandchildren.


Funeral services will be held at the Schiller Funeral Parlors at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, Thursday, Oct. 9th, with Rev. A. J. Abbott officiating. Burial will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery.


The pallbearers were George Hintz, Wm. Abel, Tony Trunkel, John Trunkel, Fred Barr and Frank Abel.
