Vernon Underwood (1923 - 1999)
 

Vernon C. Underwood, 76, Colby, died Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Wausau Hospital Center.


Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 20 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan with Rev. Roger Moldenhauer officiating. Burial took place at the Milan Public Cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons, Kevin and Kraig Underwood, Shannon and Shane Underwood, Eric Underwood, Nathan Underwood, and Mike, Gary, Travis, and Tyler Schraufnagel.


Maurina Funeral Home in Abbotsford assisted the family with arrangements.


Vernon Underwood was born January 7, 1923 at Dorchester to the late Morgan A. and Lillie (Rasmusson) Underwood. He received his early education in Dorchester, Clark County, WI.


His marriage to Elaine Denzin, who survives, took place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Milan on July 8, 1944. They farmed in the Town of Holton until 1969. While farming, he was employed with Laabs Cheese Factory, Milan, Streckert Manufacturing, Abbotsford, DeLaval Dairy Equipment, Colby, and Rannow Cabinets, Colby. In 1987, he retired from Berg Equipment, Marshfield, where he was a link press operator.


He was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he served on the Finance Committee of the church board. He was a skilled electrician and carpenter and enjoyed fishing and gardening.


In addition to his wife survivors include, four sons, Virgil (Brigitte), Athens, Duane (Gail), Abbotsford, Darrell (Laureen), Colby, and Randy (Peg Wade), McGregor, Iowa one daughter, Sharon (Pat) Schraufnagel, Colby three sisters, Edna Pfaff, Colby, Birdie Gadke, Marshfield, and Vera Besaw, Green Bay 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.


In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by, an infant daughter, Connie his twin brother, Virgil and twin brothers, Clinton and Clifford and Burton and Elvin.
