Poppe, George W. (1888 - 1969)

Greenwood - Rites will be observed in Immanuel United Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Saturday for George W. Poppe, 80, a lifelong resident of Greenwood, Clark County, who died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 8, 1969, at Memorial Hospital in Neillsville. He was admitted there Dec. 28, following a lingering illness.

The Rev. David Logue, pastor, will officiate and burial will be made in Forest Hill cemetery, Braun Settlement.

The body will respose at the Hill Funeral Home from beginning this afternoon until 11 a.m. Saturday, when it will be taken to the church.

Mr. Poppe was born Nov. 4, 1888, in the town of Longwood, where he also received his education. His marriage to Mathilda Horn took place June 18, 1913, in Braun Settlement Reformed Church at Greenwood. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1963.

Following their marriage the couple farmed in Longwood township Clark County, retiring from farm work in 1955. Since 1962, they resided in a mobile home on the farm of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hendrickson. For a number of years, Mr. Poppe was on the Longwood town board as supervisor.

Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Mayvin) Hendrickson, Greenwood Mrs. Leroy (Violet) Wadzinski, Ravenna, Neb. a son, Ellery Poppe, Stafford, Va. nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
