Later they moved to a farm in Lynn belonging to Oscar Sternitzky and operated it for three years. Jim opened a model train shop in 1975 at his home and later moved it to Marshfield. It was called Mid-Wisconsin hobby Center, and he operated it until 1986. Following the closure of the store, Jim went to work for Triple F Feeds for about three years, while also working part time for Eldon Helm. He also started Hasz Lawn Service and worked for Spring Green Floral in Marshfield from the late 80s to the early 90s. Following these events, Jim attended UW-Marshfield for two years and then transferred to UW-Oshkosh for two more. For the final 10 years before he retired, Jim worked for the Granton Post Office. In retirement, Jim continued with the lawn service and doing a little model train work as a hobby.

Jim was involved with scouting for a number of years, being a leader for the Webelos and a cub master for three or four years and later becoming a certified merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts in model railroading.
