Street Caved In (Neillsville - 1911)

Monday night as Ole Hauge was hauling a dray load of trunks to the depot the street caved in just as he was passing in front of Herman Wegner’s saloon.  A yawning hole was opened up, completely engulfing Ole and his team and dray.  One of the horses was caught under the caving earth and was killed, and the other was saved; only by hard efforts of Ole himself narrowly escaped being buried also, as he was thrown from the seat of the dray down between the horses.

The cave-in seemed to have been caused by the sewer breaking at some point on 7th Street, and the water running outside the sewer and gradually eating a subterranean chamber. The hole opened up in the street was about 15 feet wide and 25 feet long. - Neillsville Times
