Gullickson, Mr. and Mrs. John (Golden - 11 April 1965)

Two Neillsville couples connected by the marriage of their children will observe their golden wedding anniversaries at a joint open house Saturday evening in the American Legion Memorial Hall here.

They are: Mr. and Mrs. John Gullickson of West Fifth Street and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Bardell of Hewett Street. The family connection comes through the Bardells’ son, Wilbur, now a resident of Waukegan, Ill., who married the Gullicksons’ daughter, Helen.

The open house will be from 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with friends of both couples invited to pay their respects. Arrangements are being made by the children of the two couples.

Mr. and Mrs. Gullickson have been married the longer. Their golden wedding anniversary date was passed April 11. The Bardells’ 50th anniversary will not be reached until June 2.

The Gullicksons were married in ceremonies at the old Gullickson farm, on the North Grand Avenue road in the Town of Pine Valley.

Mr. Gullickson was born in Arndal, Norway, on April 17, 1889, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gullickson. As a young man, his father came alone to America and worked in the woods, head-quartering in Neillsville. Mrs. Gullickson and her son, John, followed him when the boy was 15, in 1904.  They settled on the north Grand Avenue farm.  For many years Mr. Gullickson has operated a plumbing business in Neillsville, and, while retired, still does what he calls "small jobs."

Mrs. Gullickson is the former Gunda Lee, daughter of Ole and Anna Lee. She was born September 15, 1892, on what is now known as the Fred Appleyard farm, at the end of the North Grand Avenue Road in Pine Valley.  She attended schools in the Neillsville district. For many years Mrs. Gullickson has been an active member of the Rebekahs and the Royal Neighbors of America.

They have three children and 10 grandchildren.  The children are: Mrs. Melford (Ann) Catlin of Milwaukee, who are the parents of three children; Mrs. Bardell, mother of three, who lives with her husband and family in Waukegan, Ill.; and Henry of White Bear Lake, Minn., and father of four children.
