First Generation

  1. Paul George1 Rossmann, son of Ludwig Rossmann and LOuisa Catharina Ebling, was born in Nierstein, Rheinhessen, Germany March 16, 1842.

  2. He married Anna JohAnna Russler in Tn. Rhine, Sheboygan Co., Wis., April 12, 1865

Anna was born March 1846. She was the daughter of Henry Russler and Margaret Schmutzler. Anna died May 3, 1921 in Bemidji, MN., at 75 years of age.

OBITUARY - THE GREENWOOD GLEANER, May 12, 1921. Anna Russler Rossman was born in Bavaria, Germany March 10, 1846. She came to America with her parents when seven years of age and lived at St. Louis, MO. where she was united in marriage to Paul Rossman on April 12, 1865. Eight children were born to this union, of which one died in infancy. Her husband died at Greenwood , January 24, 1918 after which she went to Bemidjii, Minn. to live with her daughter, Mrs. George Cochran, and where she died May 3, 1921. The following children survive her: Wm. H. and Paul R. of Greenwood; Alfred of Kalispell, Montana; Lida Cochran of Bemidjii, Lilly Cochran of Portland, Oregon; Nelda Nutting of Brookings, Oregon; and Olga Darton of Loyal, Wis. She is also survived by 24 grandchjildren and 6 great grandchildren. Mrs. Rossman was a woman of sterling worth, a devoted wife and loving mother. In this community where she lived for so many years, the mention of her name will bring fond recollections of her. The body was brought to Greenwood for burial. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon and internment was made in the Greenwood Cemetery. Relatives present for the funeral from out of town were Mrs. George Cochran of Bemidjii, Minn. and Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Darton and son of Loyal.

Paul died January 24, 1918 in Greenwood, Wis., at 75 years of age. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Paul Rossman died last Thursday at his home in Greenwood at age 77. He was a veteran of the civil war and is survived by his wife and daughters: Mrs. Lida Cochran, Mrs. Lily Cochran, Mrs. Nelda Nutting, all living out west; and Mrs. Darton of Loyal, and sons: Alfred, in Montana and William and Paul of Greenwood. He was uncle to E.J. Rossman and of Fred and Julius Rossman. A few years ago he served as deputy clerk of court under Fred Draper, and served as member of the county board for years. In years gone by when his brother Jake, ran the Rossman hotel here, where the Merchants now stands, he was in Neillsville more frequently, and leaves many old friends.

He married Minnie B. Brandt in Clark Co., Wis., June 15, 1890.

Minnie was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin August 1869. She was the daughter of John Brandt. Minnie died June 25, 1933 in Tn. Warner, Clark Co., Wis., at 63 years of age. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Fall Fatal To Farmer. William Rossman, 68, Greenwood, was killed Thursday morning in a fall from a scaffold in his silo, where he was making repairs. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Rand, and three sons, Elmer, Roy, and Paul. William Rossman was a cousin of Fred Rossman, Neillsville chief of police.

W.H. ROSSMAN KILLED INSTANTLY The entire community was shocked and grieved Thursday to hear of the sudden death of William H. Rossman, prominent farmer of the town of Warner. Mr. Rossman had been in the best ofhealth and was doing some work on his silo. No one was with him at the time, but indications are that he fell from near the top of the silo to the cement floor below a distance of about 30 feet. He was found shortly before noon by his son Elmer. Medical aid was summoned but death had been instant. His skull had been fractured and his body badly bruised. Deceased was a very prominent figure in this city and surrounding community and was highly regarded for his many fine qualities. He was a devoted husband and father and his endeavors were untiring in behalf of his loved ones. William H. Rossman was born in the Town of Rhein, Sheboygan County November 29, 1865 and died at Greenwood, Wis., March 30, 1933, aged 67 years and 4 months. His early boyhood years were spent at Rhein. In 1883 he moved with his parents to the Town of Beaver; later going to Fifield, Price County where he followed the blacksmith trade. In 1895 he came to Greenwood to reside, still following his trade. In 1887 he was united in marriage to Annie Sinceley, who died in 1889, leaving one infant son, Roy P. Rossman, who survives to mourn his loss. In 1891 he was again united in marriage to Minnie Brandt of Beaver Township. To this union seven children were born, four dying in infancy and three who now with his wife survive to mourn his loss. Paul L. Rossman of Withee, Elmer at home and Mabel, Mrs. Paris Rand of Rosendale, Wisconsin. He is survived also by two brothers Alfred L. Rossman of Spokane, Washington, Paul R. Rossman of Pierce, Idaho, and three sisters, Mrs. H.L. Nutting of Medford, Oregon, Mrs. Thomas Cochran of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Arthur Darton of Loyal, Wis. Also three grandchildren and a host of friends. One sister, Mrs. George Cochran preceded him in death. Mr. Rossman served the City of Greenwood as Mayor while he was a resident here and for several years was chairman of the town of Warner. He was also an active member of the Oddfellows and M.W.A. Lodges. Funeral services were held from the local M.E. Church Monday afternoon, Rev. R.H. Maddock, officiating. The body was laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery. Out of town relatives here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Paris Rand and daughter, Rosenda, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rossman and son of Withee, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Darton, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Darton, Loyal, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Niehoff, Wausau, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Williams, Mrs. Ole Lund and son Jerry, Mr. Al Rhode and Jesse McLaughlin of Eau Claire.

William H. Rossmann and Anne A. Sinceley had the following child:

12 i. Roy Peter3 Rossmann was born in Clark Co., Wis. March 13, 1889.

He married Anna M. Schwarz in Clark Co., Wis., September 21, 1915. Anna was born in Wisconsin January 10, 1889. She was the daughter of Joseph Schwarz and HAnnah Diercks. Anna died February 29, 1988 in Loyal, Clark Co., Wis., at 99 years of age. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Roy died July 9, 1958 in Tn. Warner, Clark Co., Wis., at 69 years of age

William H. Rossmann and Minnie B. Brandt had the following children:

13 ii. Elmer Rossmann was born in Fifield, Price Co., Wis. June 3, 1891 He married Mabel Sherman in Greenwood, Wis., April 21, 1931. Mabel was born June 10, 1899. She was the daughter of Ottis Sherman and Anna Helm. Mabel died August 13, 1960 in Marshfield, Wis., at 61 years of age. .

Elmer died June 1966 in Marshfield, Wis., at 75 years of age.

14 iii. Mabel Rossmann was born in Wisconsin September 3, 1892.

She married Paris Rand. Paris was born in Wisconsin October 27, 1894. Paris died October 21, 1989 in Eldorado, Fond Du Lac C., Wis., at 94 years of age.

Mabel died October 1979 in Eldorado, Fond Du Lac Co., Wis., at 87 years of age. Living in Rosendale, Wis. in 1933.

15 iv. Paul L. Rossmann was born in Greenwood, Wis. October 14, 1895 He married LIllian M. Stafford in Clark Co., Wis., 1920 ?. LIllian was born in Wisconsin August 10, 1897. She was the daughter of JOhn Henry Stafford and Nellie Benedict. LIllian died February 12, 1982 in Withee, Clark Co., Wis., at 84 years of age. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Rossman, Lillian (1897 - 1982) Funeral services for Lillian Rossman, 84, formerly of Withee, Clark County, were at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 15, at Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood. Mrs. Rossman died early Friday morning, Feb. 12, 1982, at Victory Hospital, Stanley. She lived all her life in the Withee Area. He husband was a barber there. She entered the Clark County Health care Center in March of 1979. Survivors include one son, Robert, of LaCrosse three grandchildren and five great-grand-children. She is preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 26, 1975 three brothers her parents and one grandson. Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood, handled arrangements.

Paul died November 26, 1975 in Stanley, Wis., at 80 years of age. . Buried in Greenwood

OBITUARY - Paul ROSSMAN SERVICES HELD AT GREENWOOD

Paul Rossman, 80, Withee, Clark County, Wis. died at 1:55 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1975, at Vitory Memorial Hospital, Stanley. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29 at the Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood, with buial in the Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Eugene Antrim officiated. The Rinka Funeral Home, Greenwood, was in charge of arrangements. Paul Rossman was born Oct. 14, 1895 at Greenwood. He was married to the former Lillian Stafford on Feb. 10, 1920, at Greenwood. He was a barber for fifty years. He started barbering in Greenwood, and had been a barber in Withee for 50 years, retiring in 1968. He was a veteran of World War I, having been in the army from May 4, 1917 to May 21, 1919, serving in France. He served in the Army Occupation in Europe. He was a member of the Greenwood American Legion Post 238. Paul Rossman is survived by his wife, one son, Robert, La Crosse, and one sister, Mrs. Paris (Mable) Rand, El Dorado, Wis. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Full military rites were conducted by Wallis-Hinker Post 238 of the Greenwood American Legion, with the flag being present by Ken Speich. Pallbearers were Ernest Elmer, Fred Decker, Al Klinke, Tom Elmer, Robert Carl, Leroy Fravert.

17 vi. Hazel Rossmann was born in Clark Co., Wis. March 1900. Hazel died August 1900 in Clark Co., Wis., at less than one year of age. buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

18 vii. Infant Rossmann was born in Clark Co., Wis. July 2, 1901. Infant died July 6, 1901 in Clark Co., Wis., at less than one year of age. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Lilly is deceased. Deceased when brother William died in 1933.

She married Thomas Cochran in Clark Co., Wis., June 16, 1886.

Thomas was born in Maine July 1867.

Lilly Emma Rossmann and Thomas Cochran had the following children:

b. Paul Robert2 Rossmann (Paul George1) was born in Millhome, Manitowoc Co., Wis. June 2, 1873.

He married Helene Lena Humke in Clark Co., Wis., July 4, 1901.

Helene was born in Wisconsin 1882 ?. She was the daughter of Heinich Humke and Anna Kippenhan. Living in Spokane, WA when her sister died in 1957.

He married Vivian Rossmann in Minnesota, 1926.

Arthur died March 1977 in Spokane, Washington, at 75 years of age.

She married Henry Nutting. Henry was born October 1867. Living in Brookings. Or. in 1921.

1918 HISTORY OF CLARK COUNTY, WISCONSIN: ARTHUR E. DARTON, a resident of the village of Loyal, who was formerly identified with the agricultural interests of Beaver Township, was born near Harford, Washington County, Wis., June 8, 1866. His parents were William and Sarah (Braiser) Darton, the father a native of London, England, and the mother of Canada, in which latter country they were married. About four years later they came to Wisconsin and settled on a farm in Washington County, where eight children, including the subject of this sketch, were born, two others having been previously born to them in Canada. Arthur E. Darton acquired the elements of knowledge in the district school of the neighborhood. His parents moving to Beaver Township, Clark County, he remained with them, assisting to operate the new farm, which in course of time became his property. His father had erected a barn on the property, 35 by 54 feet, and he, himself, built two, each with cement floor, one measuring 30 by 50 and the other 18 by 60 feet. He also improved the property in other ways and raised Holstein cattle and Percheron horses, being successful in his operations. As a citizen interested in the welfare of his community, he held office for a while as a member of the township side board. In November, 1915, Mr. Darton found himself in a position to retire, and, having done his share of hard work, he took up his residence in the village of Loyal, where he is a highly esteemed citizen. He is a member of the Woodmen's camp in this village. Mr. Darton was married Jan. 1, 1896, to Olga Rossman, daughter of Hall M. Rossman, a pioneer of Greenwood Township, he having died Jan. 24, 1917. Mr. Darton and his wife are the parents of two children, Claire and Hugh. The religious affiliations of the family are with the Methodist Church.

Olga died April 4, 1962 in Marshfield, Wis., at 85 years of age. Was a resident of Loyal. Was born 10. July 1876 in Sheboygan county, Wis. daughter of Paul Rossman and Anna Roessler. Burial in Loyal cemetery.

Olga Francis Rossmann and Arthur E. Darton had the following children:

28 i. Claire3 Darton was born in Clark Co., Wis. November 24, 1899.

She married Niehoff in Wisconsin, 1930.

She married Dr. Marcel B. Ketchpaw in Loyal, Clark Co., Wis., November 11, 1944. He. died May 1977 in Bloomer, Chippewa Co., Wis

Claire died April 28, 1990 in Bloomer, Chippewa Co., Wis, at 90 years of age.

Claire Ketchpaw, 90, Bloomer, died Saturday, April 28, 1990 at Bloomer Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 1990, at First Congregational Church, Bloomer, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Jeanne Lischer will officiate. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Loyal Cemetery, Loyal, Clark County. Claire (Darton) Ketchpaw was born Nov. 24, 1899, in Clark County to Arthur and Olga (nee Rossman) Darton. She graduated from Madison Business College and taught school in the Loyal area for a number of year. She married Dr. M.B. Ketchpaw in Loyal on Nov. 11, 1944. She was employed at the Clark County Heath Care Center Owen and later worked as a bookkeeper for Kostner and Kostner Attorneys and the Abrahamson Insurance and Auto Agency in Bloomer. She was a member of the Congregational Church, a past worthy matron of the Eastern Star and the Bloomer Woman s Club. Survivors include four grandchildren five great-grandchildren, two nieces one step-daughter three step-grandchildren and four great-step-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Marcel, one son, Roger Niehoff and brother Hugh Darton.N

29 ii. Hugh Darton was born in Clark Co., Wis. November 27, 1905. Hugh died November 1986 in Greenwood, Wis., at 80 years of age.
