Shelton, George (1859 - 26 OCT 1962)

Few people believed it, even relatives, but the records proved it out that George Shelton had attained the age of 103 years when he passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 1962, at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield.

Shelton, a Negro, had been a resident of the Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) community since 1943, and during that time engaged in farming and the purchase and dispensation of junk.

Even his son, Felix, admitted that he had no idea his father was that advanced in years.  Nor did any of the neighbors and close associates, as he drove his truck daily until the time he was stricken with a stroke some five weeks ago.  Since that time he had been cared for at the Marshfield Hospital and nursing home.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock from the Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Home, with Rev. Halladay officiating.  Burial complied with his request, alongside his wife at Riverside Cemetery.  Mrs. Shelton preceded him in death, passing away Sept. 17, 1958.

George Shelton was born in Louisiana in 1859.  He was united in marriage to the late Annie Franks in Louisiana in 1899.  The couple was blessed with one son, Felix, now of Flint, Mich.  Other survivors are a granddaughter, Mary Anne Shelton of Appleton, Wis., and a daughter-in-law, Bertha Ellis of Milwaukee.

Pallbearers were Ernest Sandstrom, Nate Landrum, Van Caldwell, Frank Goodwin, John Pitts and James Barrett.
