Ayers, Martin Van Buren (1834 - 8 July 1911)

Martin Van Buren Ayers, a well known and highly respected pioneer resident of this town passed away at his home at about 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, July 8, 1911, aged 76 years.  He was born in Springfield, Bradford County, Pa., in 1834, coming to Clark County with his parents when but a young man.

He was married to Miss Annie Miller at Neillsville 40 years since.  She with their 4 children namely Alvira, Mrs. Aug. Roder of the Town of Pine Valley; Gustave of Town of Grant; Joy of Town of Washburn, and Bert, the youngest, on the home farm in Grant and seven grandchildren survive him.  One sister, Mrs. Matilda Mosher of Almira, N. Y. of his father’s family alone, survives.

Lew Ayers who died at Neillsville some six years since was a brother of the deceased.

The funeral was held from the home Tuesday morning, Rev. W. T. Hendren of Greenwood officiating. The choir was composed of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Huckstead, H. Carter, and Mrs. Arlo Huckstead with Miss Blackman as organist.

The pallbearers were Mike Grasser, Joe Buss, George Howard, Joseph Brown, Fred Riedel and Henry Pischer.

The deceased had been in poor health for several years past, necessitation one of his sons remaining at home to carry on the farm work, yet it was a stroke of paralysis suffered last Friday which terminated his life so suddenly.

Mr. Ayers was an honest, conscientious law abiding citizen, a pleasant man and neighbor, a kind and indulgent husband and father.  The large funeral with the profusion of floral tributes mutely bespoke the esteem in which the departed was held.  Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.
