Sherren, Kenneth L. (18 JUN 1925 - 10 SEP 2011)

 

Kenneth Sherren, 86, of Greenwood, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.

Kenneth Leroy Sherren was born on June 18, 1925, in Petersburg, Ill., the son of George and May (Fairow) Sherren. He graduated from Petersburg Harris High School and then enlisted into the United States Army in April of 1949. He served with the 101st Airborne Battalion as a radio operator, stationed in Germany, during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in August of 1952. He was united in marriage on Dec. 21, 1955, to Viola Helton in Moline, Ill. They moved to Greenwood in 1958 and purchased a farm in the town of Weston. Kenneth farmed for many years, before retiring, raising hogs and crops and doing custom harvesting and custom picking.

He was a member of the York Center United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post 73 and a lifetime member of the Wilson-Heintz VFW Post 2241.

Kenneth enjoyed hunting, traveling, going out to eat and reading, especially about his home town hero, Abe Lincoln, the comics and the obituaries.

He is survived by two sisters, Maxine Reller of Silvis, Ill., and Betty Kiper of Mason City, Ill. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Kenneth was preceded in death by a brother, George; and two sisters, Shirley and Nance.

Funeral services for Kenneth will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Pastor Mike Herdt of the York Center United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in the Neillsville City Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Neillsville Veteran's Council. 

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. Masonic Lodge Service at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville; and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Casket bearers are Duane Boon, Jack Kluckhohn, Art Luedeke, Evan Lenz, Harold Lenz and Benny Heck.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Neillsville American Legion, 6 Boon Blvd., Neillsville, WI 54456.
