Hein, W.F. (Retirement - 8 JAN 1944)

William F. Hein retired as rural mail carrier after 33 years of service, when he completed the trips on Friday, Dec. 31st.  We asked Mr. Hein for a review of his services for Uncle Sam, and a bit of history of the routes, and are indebted to him for the following interesting article:

On Dec. 31st I made my last trip on the rural route.  I was appointed regular carrier July 1, 1911.  Before that date I substituted one year and acted as temporary carrier 4 months.

Chas. Creviston, who now lives in California, was the first carrier out of this office.  He was appointed in 1904 and served the route about 7 years.  During my service, I acted under four postmasters, Jas. Waters, J. W. Lawrence, A. F. Han, and our present postmaster, John Michael.  We all got along fine working together.  During my line of travel I made approximately 226, 820 miles, and have tried different ways of travel.

Started out with the old horse and buggy; used four motorcycles, one dozen cars, and 10 horses.  Have tried different ways in making the route; rode horseback, walked, used skies, but my last method was the old Model A.  I have had many a spill and runaways, but have not been in any serious accident.

In 1923, I was granted a 9 month leave of absence, as my wife wasn’t well and was advised by the doctor to go west.  We spent that year in California, and came back in May and took over the route again.

The first few years I didn’t have concrete or gravel roads.  Nature took care of the roads, giving us plenty of mud and plenty of snow drifts up to the top of the fences.  Some days we were unable to follow the roads, so had to cut wire fences and go through the fields wherever we could, many time get…..(the article continued on another page that I did not get a copy of)
