Haslow, Barbara (Alice in Dairyland - 1958)

A charming young student who plans a career in home economics was crowned Wednesday at St. Fair as Wisconsin’s Alice in Dairyland.

The ceremony before 10,000 in the grandstand was the official highlight of Wednesday’s fair, which attracted an estimated 59, 980 up to 5:00 p.m.  The new Alice is Barbara Haslow, 19, of Chili, in Clark County.

She will preside as official hostess during the rest of the fair, and for a year she will appear at various functions in the state and travel to other parts of the country, as representative of Wisconsin agriculture.

Gowned in bouffant white satin and lace, Miss Haslow was crowned by last year’s queen, Nancy Kay Trewyn of Whitewater.  With her were the incoming princesses, Connie Lutz of Oconto Falls, Jane Trappe, 19, Green Bay, and Carole Calebresa, 18, a February graduate of Washington High School, Milwaukee.

A double honor came to Miss Lutz Wednesday.  She also was crowned Wisconsin Dairy Princess, to represent the state in a competition Nov. 11 - 15 at Baton Rouge, La., sponsored by the American Dairy Association.

Miss Haslow also is a student at the University of Wisconsin.  Her parents, proudly watching as she received the coveted "Alice" crown, said she has always been a good student and a happy, popular girl.  She has a boyfriend, her mother said, "but I wouldn’t say they’re going steady."

Her father, Erwin C. operates a hardware store in Chili, catering 90 percent to farm trade.  Barbara has an older sister and brother.

Wearing her sparkling coronet seated on her throne surrounded by her princesses, Barbara looked graceful as State Fair officials expressed their congratulations.

The wind freed wisps from her brown pony tail and they formed an aureole against the sunny day.
