Wolff, Charles John (19 February 1886 - 30 November 1959)

 

George Wolff, 73, of Chetek, a former resident of Neillsville, died Monday evening at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Minneapolis following a stroke.

 

Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon from the Masonic Temple at 2 p.m. The Rev. Frank B. Harcey, pastor of the United Church, will officiate, and burial will be made in the Neillsville City Cemetery. The Bergemann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

George John Wolff, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wolff, was born February 19, 1886, in Milwaukee.  The family came to Neillsville when he was a young boy.  He received his education in the Neillsville schools and latter was employed in his father’s meat market here until he entered the service March 15, 1917.

 

He served overseas from February 18, 1918, until March 11, 1919.  He was injured August 1, 1918, in France.  He was with the 261st Casualty Company and received his honorable discharge on March 27, 1919, at Camp Grant, Ill..  He also served with the National Guard from 1908 - 1911.

 

He returned to Neillsville, where he operated the meat market for a few years, then was employed as a salesman for the Cudahy Packing Company.  Later he was employed by the Fair Store in Chicago, and following that work was an employee of the Wilson Packing Company for 13 years.

 

In 1940 he went to Chetek, where he operated a resort until 1946.  In 1951, he was employed by the Chetek Co-op services until he was forced to retire due to ill health.

 

His marriage to the former Elsie Huckstead of Neillsville took place September 19, 1938, in Decorah, Ia.

 

Mr. Wolff belonged to the Masonic Lodge, the Blue Lodge, the Chapter and the Commandery of Chetek, and the Eau Claire Consistory.  He was a member of the American Legion of the Howard-Campbell-Ganske Post No. 179 of Chetek and of the Disabled War Veterans.

 

He is survived by his wife and a daughter, Miss Jane Wolff, Chetek; and a sister, Mrs. E. J. Roberts of Neillsville.

Funeral services with Masonic rites were held last Thursday afternoon from the Masonic Temple for George Wolff, 73, of Chetek, who died November 30 at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Minneapolis. The Rev. Frank B. Harcey, pastor of the United Church, officiated.  Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery, with the Haugen-Richmond Post, No. 73, American Legion, in charge of military rites.

 

Pallbearers were: John Brandt, William Gallagher, Arthur Haugen, Charles Poole, Bob Wagner and Joseph Zimmer.

 

Two hymns, "The Lord is My Shepherd" and "Softly and Tenderly" were sung by Mrs. Robert D. Peters, accompanied by Mrs. Jack Grether.

 

Out of town people here for the services were: Mrs. George Wolff and daughter, Jane, Chetek; Mrs. Ina Graham, Robbinsdale, Minn.; Mrs. L. Vosseteig, D. W. Vosseteig, and L. Vosseteig, Mr. and Mrs. Jens Vosseteig, all of Galesville; Mr. and Mrs. William Hill, Elroy; Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Scholtz, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Young, Winona, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Wade Pennell, and Mrs. Ida DeMunck, Plymouth; Mrs. Minnetree Block and Dr. and Mrs. D. J. DeMunck, Milwaukee; Tom Darison, Rice Lake; Mr. and Mrs. John Muermann, George Serley, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Taylor, Wallace Gotham, Walter Belderbach, Mr. and Mrs. Weslack, The Rev. Otis Botls, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ward, and M. H. Ford, all of Chetek; E. J. Vine, and Mr. and Mrs. Irving Vine, Granton.
