Kalsow, Mr. and Mrs. Albert (58th - 16 October 1959)

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kalsow, early pioneers of the Town of Weston, celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary Friday when relatives and neighbors dropped in to surprise them.

Albert Kalsow was born February 25, 1874, at Johnson Creek where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kalsow, located after arriving from Germany.  When 18 months of age, Albert came with his parents to Clark County, locating one-half mile west of Globe corners on the farm now operated by Mr. and Mrs. Lebrecht Kalsow. The timber was so heavy at that time that the father had to cut a trail through the woods to get to his 40 acre plot.

Mary (Hoffmann) Kalsow was born in Germany November 6, 1883, to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hoffmann, and when eight years of age she came with her parents to America, locating in the Town of Weston, near Globe.  Both Mary and Albert attended rural school at a school which later became known as Fairview, south of Globe.

On October 16, 1901, they were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Globe, with the Rev. F. W. A. Thrun officiating.  They were attended by his youngest brother, Lebrecht, now of Globe, and by her sister, Mrs. Otto (Emma) Kalsow (deceased).

After their marriage they took up housekeeping in a residence just south of Globe store, where they lived for 27 years during which time Mr. Kalsow, a carpenter, built many houses, barns, chicken coops, machine sheds, pig pens, milk houses and other structures still in use in the Greenwood, Christie and Weston areas.  The house in which they lived later was moved east of the Black River and northwest of Christie, where it is still in use.

After living five years in Milwaukee, where Mr. Kalsow followed his trade they moved to Neillsville in 1934 and purchased the residence in which they now reside of Mrs. Elsie Pierce on West Fourth Street.  Mr. Kalsow continued his carpentering and shop work until recently.  He still walks daily to the Art Carl shop and occasionally is called upon to sharpen a saw, knife or sickle.

Four children were born to this union: Victor of Menomonee Falls; Mrs. Ernest (Fala) Gloff of Marshfield; Mrs. Edwin (Leona) Sternitzky of Granton; and Mrs. Walter (Evelyn) Grottke of Ross’s Eddy, pine Valley.  They also have 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Kalsow are members of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Neillsville.
