Barrett, William E. (31 OCT 1871 - 13 SEP 1956)

 

William E. Barrett, a resident of this community (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.) for the past 73 years, passed away of old age infirmities Sept. 13, 1956 at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 13 days.

 

He was born in Canada on Oct. 31, 1871, and at the age of 11 years he came to the United States with his parents, a brother and sister.

 

He was united in marriage to Nettie Barr here on Jan. 17, 1906.  To this union was born one daughter and one son.

 

Mr. Barrett attended the local schools and was a graduate of Thorp High School and business college.  He spent many years of his life in the woods as a logger and camp foreman, and later did mason work and was a partner in the Barrett Feed Mill here with his father and brother.  He served as village assessor and village clerk for a number of years and was a Democratic candidate for Clark County Clerk in one campaign.  He proceeded to be civic minded throughout his life.

 

He leaves to mourn, his daughter, Dorothy of Owen, his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Helen Barret of Michigan, one brother, Ernest of Milwaukee, and several nieces and nephews.  His wife, Nettie, passed away in August 1954, and his son, Fred died in April 1955.

 

Rev. Cecil Ward, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated at funeral services for the deceased at 1:30 o’clock on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16th at the Thorp Funeral Home.  Mrs. Bernard Rusch sang accompanied by Mrs. Sherman Alger on the Hammond Organ.

 

He was laid to rest beside his wife in the East Thorp Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Charles Frinack Jr., Charles Frinack Sr., Art Steele Jr., Bernie Rusch, Leland Alberts and ed Alger.

 

Relatives and friends from out of town here to attend the services were Dorothy Barrett of Owen, Ernest Barrett, Mrs. Lydia Albert and daughter Gretchen, Mrs. Evelyn Blair of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Steele of Abbotsford, and Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmer and Mrs. Clarissa Steele of Greenwood.
