Kyle, James P. #2 (1939? - 20 MAY 1956)

A Stanley High School senior who would have been graduated tonight was instantly killed when his car rolled over him early Sunday morning.

James P. Kyle, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Kyle, route 1, became the 11th traffic victim of 1956 in Chippewa County.  He was thrown from the 1948 sedan he was driving after it went out of control on CTH G, two miles south of Highway 29 and about five miles southwest of Stanley.  He was alone and returning home after taking a girlfriend home at 12:30 a.m.  The accident is believed to have happened around 1 a.m.  He apparently fell asleep at the wheel of the car, which went off on the east shoulder and then went out of control as it was pulled back onto the road.

Chippewa County Traffic officer Max Brookshaw, who investigated the accident, said the car rolled over several times along the right of way.  Kyle was thrown out and apparently crushed by the car.  He was found 60 feet from the wreckage.

A passing motorist stopped by the wreckage at 1:30 a.m. and took some of the tools out of the roadway.  He found the motor cold and assumed that the wreck had already been investigated.  The body wasn’t found until about 5 a.m. when the hired man of a nearby farmer found the wreck and the body while he was on his way to work.

Surviving are the youth’s parents; four brothers, Emmett, Jr., in service. Robert, Edward, Dennis, at home; three sisters, Lorraine, Rosemary, jean Marie; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Mika, Mauston.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Ralph Geissler officiating.  Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
