Kugel, John (14 Apr. 1875 - 15 Jan. 1960)

Funeral services for John Kugel, 84, who died Friday morning, were held Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Bernard’s Catholic church. The Rev. Raymond B. Schultz officiated at the requiem high mass and at the internment, made in the Abbotsford cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ben Apfelbeck, Walter Gasch, Elmer Haas, John Hoffmann, Alvin Schmidt and James Vrana.

Mr. Kugel was born April 14, 1875, at Shawano, and was married there Oct. 14, 1902, to Miss Josephine Smalzal. He operated a saw mill at Bear Creek until 1921, and then farmed near to a farm in the Town of Hull. In 1946, they retired and made their home with their son, Rudolph, on a farm also in the Town of Hull.

Surviving him are his widow, three sons, Rudolph, of Colby, rt. 1; James, Withee, until 1930, when they moved to Unity, rt. 1; and Ernest of Milwaukee; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Mamie) Baldeschwiler of Jim Falls and Mrs. Alfred (Agnes) Swoboda of Colby; nine grand children and 12 great grand children. A brother, Thomas Kugel of Antigo, and a sister, Mrs. John (Mary) Popelka, of Elkhart Lake, also survive.

Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Mr. Kugel suffered a stroke on Jan. 1, followed by another two days later, after which he was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital, Marshfield, where death occurred at 1:13, Friday morning.

All of the children attended the funeral and his only surviving brother, as well as a large number of friends and neighbors.
