Melvin, Lydia (30 July 1883 - 24 July 1959)

Mrs. Lydia Melvin died at her home Friday afternoon. She would have been 76 years old today. The body lay in state at the Polnaszek Funeral Home from Sunday evening until Tuesday when it was taken to the First Presbyterian church where services were held at 2:00 o’clock with the Rev. Wallace Smith officiating.

Miss June Kennedy sang "Rock of Ages," as a special request, with Miss Jackie Scheel playing the organ accompaniment.

Pallbearers for the internment, made in the Abbotsford cemetery, were Gerhardt Anderson, Walter Gasch, Edward Lueth, Raymond Orth, William Pupp, and Leo Underwood.

Flowers were carried by Mrs. Louis Nacker, Mrs. Art Scheibe, and Mrs. Walter Gasch.

Mrs. Melvin was born Lydia Whitney, July 30, 1883, at North Bend. She married James Melvin at Black River Falls, June 1, 1904. They made their home at Black River Falls for several years and at Owen for five years. In 1929, they came to Abbotsford where Mr. Melvin died in 1945.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Harley (Loretta) German, Curtiss; Mrs. Elizabeth Hempfner, La Crosse; Mrs. Roland (Genevieve) Gasch, Abbotsford; and three sons, Francis and Archie, Abbotsford; and Capt. William L. Melvin, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. There are 20 grand children and 20 great grand children.

Two sisters and four brothers also survive: Mrs. Marion Bergerson, Mrs. David McCaffery and Bert Whitney, Bozman, Montana; Vern Whitney, Washington; Henry Whitney, Stillwater, Minnesota; and Frank Whitney, Black River Falls.

Preceding her in death, besides her husband, were two daughters, Mrs. Henry (Margaret) Weideman, and Charlotte Melvin; and three sisters and one brother.
