Arneson, Shirley (02 MAY 1933-30 MAY 2010)

 

Shirlet Arneson, 77, Belfield, N.D., died peacefully on Sunday, May 30, 2010, under the loving care of her children at the home of Steven and Beverly Kelley, in Greenwood. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 9, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield. The Rev. Shannon Luchts officiated. Josh Kelley served as a pallbearer.

 

Shirley Carol Kessel was born on May 2, 1933, in Dickinson, N.D., to Philip and Mildred (nee Polanchek) Kessel Talkington. She grew up and attended school in Belfield. She married Dr. Gene "Doc" Arneson in May 1980, in Cross Plains, N.D. She was employed with the Dane County Visiting Nurse Service for 12 years, and also assisted her husband in his veterinary clinic for many years. In 1997, they moved to Belfield, where she was active in the community and served and served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, Senior Center, and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a devoted Christian and was faithful to her Bible studies. A highlight of her life was when she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. She will be remembered for her jovial and free spirit. Her contagious laughter lightened many hearts.

 

Survivors include her husband, Doc; six children, Patrick (Betty) Kelley, Nashfield, Tenn., Steven (Bev) Kelley, Greenwood, John (Debbie) Kelley, Alvarado, Tex., Donna Hofer, Prairie du Chien, Mikel (Michelle) Kelley, Mt. Horeb, and Marcus (Margit) Kelley, Mt. Horeb; 12 grandchildren, Chris, Josh, Sarah, Vince, Megan, Monica, Cassy, Allan, Maggie, Erin, Desmond and Laslow; and 10 siblings, Phyllis, "Tootsie" Roth, Belfield, Patricia "Patsy" Steiner, Belfield, Charles "Charlie" (Leona) Kessel. Belfield, Raymond (Cheryl) Kessel, Belfield, Thomas "Harpo" Kessel, Belfield, Ralph Kessel, Belfield, Leroy Kessel, Newell, S.D., Lawrence (Jeannie) Kessel, Fargo, N.D., Allen "Buttons" (jean) Kessel, Santa Fe, N.M., and Valarie "Cookie" Bergman, Cinncinnati., Ohio.

 

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Phillip "Bunny" Kessel and Vernon "Sketter" Kessel; and three sisters, Darian Kessel, JoAnn Schroeder and Joyce Benham.
