Kapka, Martin #2 (24 May 1846 - 1912)

In the death of Martin Kapka, Neillsville loses one of its sturdy Civil War veterans, and one whose life was fraught with hard labor and patriotism.  Mr. Kapka was born in Washington County, Wis., May 24, 1846.  At the age of 14 he started out in life, apprenticing himself to a blacksmith at Cedarburg.  He followed this trade until Jan. 10, 1864, when he enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of Light Infantry at Milwaukee.  He was discharged July 10, 1865, and he took up his residence in Sheboygan county, where he was united in marriage to Miss Amelia Keener on Oct. 25, 1868.  They lived there until March 1881, when they removed to Neillsville.  Here Mr. Kapka followed his trade and worked steadily until a few months ago, when failing health compelled him to quit.

Mr. Kapka was a man who became inured to hard work in childhood, and during his entire life he labored incessantly that he might lay away a competence for his wife and children when the time came that he could work no more.  He took great pride in all that he undertook, and this thoroughness of manner stamped him through life.  He was a kindly husband and father and a good neighbor, and he has many very sincere friends in this city who will mourn his demise.  He was a member of Chas. Bacon Post, G.A.R., and was inner guard at the meetings.  He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Dwyer and Mrs. John Lynch, and one son Charles Kapka.  The funeral will be held at the family residence on the north side next Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
