Hammond Fire (30 January 1955)

Fire of unknown origin almost completely destroyed the John Hammond residence Sunday morning.  The interior was badly gutted.  Part of this house was built and used as the post office at Maple Works corners, prior to the establishment of the Granton station on the railroad that was built through here in 1890-91.  John and his father Charles Hammond, and his brother Fred are staying temporarily with his sister, Mrs. Martin Garbisch.
