Smith, Raymond Earl (7 February 1940 - 18 November 2009)  
 

Raymond E. Smith, 69, of Hatfield died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. 
 

Raymond Earl Smith was born Feb. 7, 1940, in Portage, the son of Harold and Mabel (Bauman) Smith.  He attended Montello High School, and shortly after finishing his education, he began working for the Ripon Cookie Company and also drove gravel truck.  Ray was united in marriage to Barbara Ashley in 1960.  He began an internship to become a glazier.  He worked for several glass companies in the Madison area during the 25 years he was in the glass business.  Ray and Barbara divorced in 1974.  Ray was united in marriage July 29, 1978, to Emily Holmgren.  While working in the glass business, Ray also owned and operated a dairy farm in Arena.  In April of 1988 they moved to Neillsville to farm, and in 1991 they purchased Snowball’s Bar and renamed it 40th and Plum Glass House.  Today it is known as The Glass House. 
 

Ray loved to fish and ride his scooter around Hatfield with his dog, Katie-9.  He loved to sing and he loved having family home and grilling out for them. 
 

He is survived by his wife, Emily; a son, Robert (Cheri) Smith of De Forest; two daughters, Terri Rudolph of Madison and Janice (Tony) Alliano of Orlando, FL; four step-daughters, Valerie (Raymond) Flogel of Mazomanie, Virginia Holmgren of Madison, Vicki Goussenkova of Dane and Veronica (Joe) Cushing of Pana, IL; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  He is further survived by two brothers, Arnold Smith of Waupun and Allen (Lillia) Smith of Ripon, and two sisters, Doris (Larry) Wright of Omro and Jeannie (Michael) Bleacher of Atlanta, GA.  Ray is also survived by his best friend - his dog, Katie-9. 
 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Hazel Smith. 
 

Funeral Services for Ray were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville.  Visitation was from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Pastor Caleb Azure officiated.  Interment was in the Hatfield Cemetery. 
 

Casketbearers were his grandsons.

When Ray Smith moved to Neillsville he bought a house from us where the dmv is now located.  His hired man lived in the house and had driven a big tractor with a wagon load of stuff from arena to Neillsville!  Don Schutte
