Counsell, Henry (March 15, 1835-Nov 20, 1910)

Last Sunday evening at 6 o’clock at his home on South Oak Street, Henry Counsell died after about a year and a half of patient suffering.  The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the family residence.  The services will be conducted by Rev. Burrows.

Henry Counsell was born in Somersetshire, England, March 15, 1835.  With his parents he came to America in 1848, residing in New York state for about a year and then coming to Wisconsin and settling in Waukeshau County where he remained until the fall of 1856.  In company with his brother, Joseph, now of Hartland, and two other companions he came to Clark County.  Traveling by ox team and part of the way following a blazed trail, he settled down on what is now known as Pleasant Ridge and began the arduous task of hewing a home out of the wilderness.

In the fall of 1858 Mr. Counsell was united in marriage to Susan Mary Pope, and they resided on the farm they so industriously made until in 1906, when, feeling that they had earned a rest from their long labors, they came to this city to reside.  But Mr. Counsell’s rest was to be of comparatively short duration, for he was shortly stricken with illness that was to dispel the dream of yet long and happy years in peace and comfort.

Mr. Counsell was one of the class of rugged men who so ably assisted in the early development of the county, and has been fortunate in being able to watch it grow from a wilderness into a land of beautiful homes and farms, and those who live after him should take pride in the knowledge that he was a prominent factor in this development.  A more honorable and conscientious man than Mr. Counsell never lived, for he lived a life that was a model of sobriety, industry and good will toward his fellow man.  It is a source of deepest regrets to his many friends that he was not able to enjoy to the fullest extent the fruits of his labor and goodness.

Henry Counsell is survived by his wife and four children, the latter being W.H. Counsell of Milwaukee, Ore.; O.E. Counsell who resides on the home farm; J.E. Counsell of Pleasant Ridge and Mrs. Nettie Short who resided with her parents.  Two daughters have gone before him, Mrs. Ida V. Lowe who died in Aug. 1891, and little Jennie who died in infancy.
