Nelson, Grace (1943? - 1 OCT 1954)

Residents of the community (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) were surprised to learn of the sudden death of 11 year old Grace Nelson last Friday.

Gracie, as she was known to her many friends, died Friday evening at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire where she had been taken for treatment of a kidney ailment.

Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday, Oct. 5th, from the Holway Lutheran Church, Taylor County.  Father Donald Rheasa, pastor of St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church, Owen, officiated at the final rites.  Burial was made in the family lot in the Holway Cemetery.

One had to know and have seen Gracie in order to appreciate this remarkable little child.

Handicapped since birth by absence of legs, she made the most of her predicament staving off disappointment with intense determination aided by the untiring and devoted love and care rendered her by her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter (Peter) Boxrucker, with whom she made her home.

For the past three years she had been attending the orthopedic school at Eau Claire where she was when she became ill last week.

Surviving her are her father, Arnold Nelson, Town of Holway; two sisters and three brothers.  Her mother passed away in 19454, two years after Gracie was born.
