Kuehl, Charles #2 (1 NOV 1863 - 14 JUL 1954)

Death came peacefully to Charles Kuehl, Sr., prominent businessman and pioneer resident of the village of Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), on Wednesday, July 14, 1954, at 3:15 in the afternoon in his home where he had lived since 1902.

Funeral services were conducted at two o’clock Saturday afternoon, July 17, from Griebenow’s Funeral Home.  Rev. W. Clayton Nielsen officiated with burial being made in Riverside Cemetery.  Pallbearers were Edgar and Clinton Albert, Emil A. Hansen, John Zasoba, Viggo Rasmussen and Roy Segerstrom.  In charge of the floral offerings were Natalie Scherf, Mrs. Edgar Albert, Mrs. Clinton Albert, Mrs. Roy Segerstrom, Mrs. Clara Christensen and Mrs. Rex Copper.

Mr. Kuehl was 90 years, 8 months and 14 days of age at the time of his death, which was attributed to complications of old age.  He was born on Nov. 1, 1863 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.  In May 1880 he came to America, settling in New Holstein.  Four years later he moved to Thorp where he worked for L. O. Garrison and Co.  In 1898 the Withee Mercantile Co. was formed by Messrs. Garrison and Kuehl, a firm which Mr. Kuehl owned for many years.

On Sept. 19, 1902 he and Anna Mattson were united in marriage in a ceremony performed in Withee.  During the many years of happy wedlock which followed Mr. Kuehl was also successful in his business ventures and an active civic leader.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for over 50 years and a past director of the State Bank of Withee.  Several years ago he retired from business affairs but during those years and these of retirement he enjoyed living a long, healthy and happy life, sharing the companionship and happiness of his many friends found in his new homeland and also being able to visit his active country on three different occasions.

Mr. and Mrs. Kuehl spent a happy day entertaining their many relatives and friends in observance of their Golden Wedding Anniversary two years ago.

He is survived by his wife and two sons, Charles Jr. and George, both of Madison.  Two sisters preceded him in death.

Out of town relatives and friends attending the services were from Madison, Whitehall, La Crosse, Ettrick, Stanley, Stevens Point, Owen, Lodi, Withee, Curtiss, Bruce and Longwood.
