Hodd, Robert, Jr. (7 JUL 1945 - 6 APR 1952)

A coroner’s inquest has been ordered in the death of Robert Hodd, Jr., six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hodd, Abbotsford, who died instantly of injuries sustained when struck by a car while played on Highway 13 late Sunday afternoon in Abbotsford, Wis.  His parents are the owners of the Abby Theater and former residents of the Curtiss community.

Reports of the accident state that Robert and a playmate were playing in front of the Elmer Schraufnagel residence when struck by a car driven by Mrs. john Van Dreel of Wis. Rapids.  The Van Dreels were former residents of the village of Abbotsford, having moved to Wis. Rapids earlier in the week.  They were returning home from Dorchester where they had spent the afternoon bowling when the accident occurred.

The Van Dreel car did not stop at the scene of the accident but continued on for several blocks.  It wasn’t until nearly a half hour later that they returned to the scene.

Robert died almost instantly as his body was thrown by the impact against an electric light pole.  He suffered a severe skull fracture, a broken left arm and leg abrasions.

Monday forenoon Sheriff Dobes and Coroner Bergeman were in Owen and picked the jury members. Named to the jury were M. M. Diehm, A. C. Little, Art Lysdahl, Wm. Hoag, L. W. Cattanach and H. M. Wollum.  This group and County traffic officer, Capt. Wm. Nelson, motored to Abbotsford, viewing the scene of the accident and the body.

Sheriff Dobes said the inquest would be held at the Owen City Hall next week.

Funeral services for the youth were conducted yesterday at Abbotsford, Wis.
