Maves, Earl C. #2 (8 APR 1923 - 10 MAR 1952)

 

Earl Clifford Maves, 28, former outstanding University of Wisconsin fullback, died at the Sacred Heart Hospital at Eau Claire Monday of Hodgkin’s Disease.

 

Mr. Maves, who was formerly of Stanley but in recent years a resident of Eau Claire at 522 ½ Bellinger St., had been in ill health for the past two years.

 

The funeral was conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Presbyterian Church at Stanley, the Rev. Charles Melcher of Eau Claire officiating.  Interment was made in the Stanley Cemetery.

 

Surviving are his wife, Claudia, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Maves of Stanley, two sisters, Sharon of Stanley, and Mrs. Lionel Strand of Hixton, Wis.

 

He was born at Ladysmith on April 8, 1923.  The family moved to Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) where they lived ten years, and then to Stanley.

 

A graduate of the Stanley High School, Maves attended the University of Wisconsin and was a sophomore fullback on the powerful 1942 Wisconsin squad.  He played at Michigan in 1943 as a marine trainee.  He served on foreign duty in the Marine corps. From July 1945 to July 1946.  He returned to the University of Wisconsin after his discharge from the service in 1946 and starred as a breakaway fullback in 1946 and 1947.

 

On Aug. 17, 1947, he married Miss Claudia James, of Sioux city, Ia., the wedding taking place at the First Presbyterian Church, Eau Claire.

 

He was a member of the National "W" Club of the University of Wisconsin, and of the Stanley Masonic Lodge No. 273.
