Pietras, Zofia (1889 - 22 NOV 1953)

Mrs. Frank Pietras, 62, of near Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), was instantly killed Sunday night when she was struck by a car as she stepped onto the highway after the truck in which she was riding with her husband ran into a ditch.

Lawrence Suda, route 3, Greenwood, and Edwin Przybylski of route 1, Thorp, told Coroner John Bergmann that they had driven by the truck in the ditch on their way to Thorp from a nearby dance hall, but did not stop as there were other cars there.

On their return from Thorp, they said, Mrs. Pietras stepped onto the highway in the path of their car as they again reached the accident scene.

Bergmann reported that Mr. and Mrs. Pietras were returning to their home, and that Pietras missed the turn into his driveway and the pickup truck ran into the ditch and overturned. Mrs. Pietras was thrown from the truck, he said. Pietras was uninjured.

Authorities investigating the accident considered the possibility that Mrs. Pietras was dazed when the truck in which she was riding plunged into the ditch, and that she may have wandered onto the highway while in that condition.

Coroner Bergmann, at his office in Neillsville, said there had been no given inquest into the death of Mrs. Pietras. The matter of choosing a jury to investigate he circumstances surrounding the fatal accident was under consideration, he said.

Mrs. Pietras was the mother of four children. One son is with the armed forces in Korea, another son and daughter reside in Chicago and a third sons lives at home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pietras will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Hedwig’s Church. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Thorp Funeral Home.
