Bestel, Hiram (10 DEC 1893 - 20 JUN 1950)

Residents of the Hixon Township (Clark Co., Wis.) and its surrounding communities were shocked late Saturday afternoon when they heard that one of its lifelong and pioneer citizens, Hiram Felix Bestel, had died of a heart attack.

Mr. Bestel had left his home early that morning and gone to Rock Dam with friends for the purpose of readying a cottage for guests. He complained to one of his companions at noon that he didn’t fell well. Al continued with their work until a few minutes later when they checked to see how he was feeling, only to find him dead of a heart attack. He died at 12:30 p.m.

He had been born and raised in the Town of Hixon and worked a farm near the community of Clark. Hiram was a genuine fellow who at first meeting won the love and admiration of all that knew him. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed fishing and hunting as his favorite recreations to supplement his hard and efficient everyday labors.

Hiram was born on Dec. 10, 1893, being 56 years of age at the time of his sudden death. Mourning his untimely passing are his widow Delia; two brothers, Ted and Perry of Milwaukee, and a sister, Mrs. William (Ann) Seibrecht, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Funeral services were conducted from the Griebenow Funeral Parlors at two o’clock, Tuesday afternoon, June 27th. The Rev. Dr. K. O. Crosby, pastor of St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church, Owen, officiated. Burial was made in the Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers were: emil Niemi, Lawrence Munson, Myron Kasen, Lionel Tibbets, Milford Wenzel and Ted Gregory.

Those in charge of flowers were: Ida Niemi, Winnie Venet, Edythe Wenzel, Natalie Scherf, Etta Gregory and Scotch Copper. During the service Ida Munson sang "In a Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Among those that came from away for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bestel, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Bestel and Mr. and Mrs. William Seibrecht, Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. George Schuleikt, and Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Urggin, Milwaukee; Mrs. Gene Price and Mrs. Leora Calkins, Chicago, Ill.; Mr.a nd Mrs. Glyny Tisdale, Mr. and Mrs. Early Barnum and Vernon Douphner, Eau Claire; Bob Erickson, Cape May, N.J.; Joe Cerne and Judy Anawick, Rock Dam.
