Clifton, Donna (20 MAY 1950)

Residing for the present at 315 W. Dean Av., Madison, are Mr. and Mrs. Francis A. Swiggum, who were married at 9 a.m. on May 20, 1950 at St. Bernard’s Church by the Rev. Jerome Mersberger. Gladioli arrangements decorated the altar before which the former Miss Donna M. Clifton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd E. Clifton, 533 Miler Av., Madison, but formerly of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), exchanged vows with the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Swiggum, 315 W. Dean Av.

The bride’s white satin gown was designed with a colonial neckline filled with gathered net, a full skirt, and long train. A half hat of lace and net trimmed with lilies of the valley held her fingertip veil and she carried red roses centered with white roses. Mr. Clifton gave his daughter in marriage.

As her sister’s maid of honor, Miss Darlene Clifton was attired in a pink marquisette gown made with a high neckline and brief sleeves, and a matching heart shaped hat. The bridesmaids, Miss Betty Swiggum, sister of the bridegroom, Miss Mary Lee Fix, cousin of the bridegroom, and Mrs. Floyd J. Clifton, sister-in-law of the bride, wore identical ensembles in blue. All the attendants carried pink carnations.

The flower girl, Rita Vachon, Fond du Lac, cousin of the bride, was dressed in white satin with a rayon net overskirt and carried a colonial bouquet. The ring bearer was Charles Davis, nephew of the bride.

Roman Muoer, Chicago, served as best man, and Floyd Clifton, Warren Olson, and Wayne Knickmeyer ushered.

Mrs. Clifton witnessed the ceremony in a blue dress with white accessories and a corsage of white carnations. The bridegroom’s mother chose a green Bemberg print dress, black accessories, and a similar corsage.

A breakfast was served to the immediate families at the Esquire Club and later the couple received 200 guests at the Swiggum home. Assistants were Mrs. Frank Custer, Miss Virginia Jensen, and Miss Donna Phillips.

The couple traveled to Chicago, Michigan, Milwaukee, and northern Wisconsin. Mrs. Swiggum’s travel ensemble was a pink suit, navy blue accessories and a white rose corsage.

The bride is employed by the Madison Newspapers, Inc., and Mr. Swiggum, who attended Madison College, is associated with the Employer’s Mutual Insurance Co., Chicago. After July 15 they will be at home at 622 Buckingham Pl., Chicago.
