Bauer, Loretta (8 Dec. 1919 - 24 Oct. 1943)

Funeral services for Miss Loretta Bauer, 23, of Winetka, Ill., who was killed early Sunday morning when she was hit by a truck near Chicago, were held this morning at 10:00 o’clock at St. Bernard’s Catholic church. The Rev. Francis Brockman officiated at the requiem high mass. Internment was made in the Abbotsford cemetery.

Pallbearers were Clarence Chris, Rhienold Frueh, Norman Lukas, Otto Schecklman, Rudy Sterzinger and Sylvester Tessmer.

The flowers were carried by Mrs. Earl Boss, Mrs. James Foster, Mrs. Robert Bogaard and the Misses Marie Carpenter, Anna Marie Hanson and Alice Kalepp.

Loretta Bauer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bauer, was born Dec. 8, 1919 at Augusta, Wis. About 1922 the family moved to Abbotsford, Wis. After completing grade school education at Pleasant Hill, she attended the Abbotsford high school and graduated with the class of 1938.

For the past five years she has been employed near Chicago.

The fatal accident occurred about 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning, after working hours. Miss Bauer, with Mrs. Doris Murray, of Highland Park, and Marion Trela, of Chicago, had gotten off duty at the Sunset Country Club in Northbrook where they were employed and stopped at the Villa Moderne, Skokie highway and County Line road, just inside the Cook county border.

Returning to the car which was parked at the side of a four lane highway, Mrs. Murray was just stepping into it and Mr. Trela and Miss Bauer were immediately behind her when the truck, southbound, driven by Frank Hughes, 24, of La Grange, Indiana, crashed into the trio and the parked car, also about to continue south.

The car was shunted across the road and the truck ran over Miss Bauer and Mr. Trela, killing Miss Bauer instantly.

At the coroner’s inquest held, information brought by the traffic officer showed that the driver of the truck instead of making a left turn, made one to the right and ran directly into the victims. The truck was a semi-trailer heavily loaded.

Mr. Trela, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition from abdominal injuries and a fractured leg, died as a result of the injuries. Mrs. Murray was badly cut and bruised.

The body of Miss Bauer was brought to Abbotsford and was taken to the home of the parents where it remained until time for funeral services.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bauer, three sisters, Mrs. W. D. (Marie) Lofland, Abbotsford; her twin sister, Mrs. Randal (Lorena) Sterzinger; Colby; Mrs. Frank (Hilda) Gesualdo, Highwood, Ill.; and one brother, Leonard, at home.

The grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Frueh, Augusta, also survive.

An infant brother and sister preceded her in death.
