Schneider, Fred #2 (5 NOV 1916 - 4 AUG 1949)

Final rites were conducted from the First Evangelical and Reformed Church at Colby with the Rev. F. P. Puhlmann officiating, at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon. Burial services were conducted by the Colby V.F.W. Post at Cherokee.

Freddie, as he was known to his many friends and associates in this community, stunned everybody when it was learned that he had self inflicted his death by hanging in his hotel room in the city of La Crosse at an early hour of the evening, a week ago tonight. He had been employed as a lineman on the crew working out of the Owen office of the Northern States Power Co., for the past two and one-half years. A week prior to his death he had been temporarily transferred from the Owen office to La Crosse. No motive can be found for his act except that he had written to his wife of his loneliness in his new environment and it is believed that he was despondent over his transfer.

A shy, well mannered and unassuming chap, Freddie, undoubtedly was one of the best like and most respected on the company’s staff. His superintendent relates that on the job he was one of the most amiable and hardest working employees.

Mr. Schneider was born Nov. 5, 1916, in the town of Hull, Marathon Co. He was married May 28 to Delia Poppe of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.). He entered service of the U.S. Army June 26, 1943, and served in the European Theater of War. He received his honorable discharged in Jan. 1946. For the past several years he has been employed by the Northern States Power Co.

Surviving are his widow; his mother, Mrs. Emma Schneider of Colby; four brothers, George of Colby, German of Hudson, Robert of Greenwood, and Alfred of Ladysmith; and three sisters, Mrs. Alfred Hertel of School Hill, Sheboygan Co.; Mrs. Harold Glenzer, Colby; and Mrs. Alvin Schuman, Harriet, S.D.
