Olson, Daniel family (6 JAN 1949)

In a snug, new, blue-trimmed farm house on an 80 acre farm five miles northeast (of Greenwood, Clark Co., Wis.) lives the Daniel Olson family, population 6.

There are a lot of Olsons around here, a lot of them related. But the Daniel Olsons have a particular distinction.

Their three sons, aged 6, 4 and 2 years share birthdays with the Baby New Year.

Gerald was born at 7 a.m. on Jan. 1, 1943, the year after his blond, blue-eyed mother, Alice, married carrot-topped Daniel Olson.

Duane was born at 5 a.m. on Jan. 1, 1945.

Dickey Lee (his real name is Richard, but nobody calls him that) was born at 8 p.m. on Jan. 1, 1947.

All those birthdays meant quadruple festivities on the Daniel Olson’s New Year’s Day. About 40 relatives, Olsons and Wendts, with their husband, wives and children, flocked into the blue trimmed house for a four decker celebration.

"We have ‘em all over on New Year’s" Mrs. Olson explained Friday while she kneaded dough for buns and thought about how many pie crusts and how many cherries it takes to feed cherry pie to 40 people. "That’s the official day for a family party, I guess from now on."

She was planning to have the crowd eat dinner in shifts, a dinner of roast beef, mashed potatoes, creamed peas, baked beans, salad, the buns and the cherry pie.

The birthday cake, the very special joint birthday cake with three names on it (The Baby New Year wasn’t mentioned) was to be saved for supper, when the Olsons would eat it with ice cream.

Gerald, Duane and Dickey Lee were excited about the cake when their father brought it from town on Friday. They even got a peek at the red frosting rosebuds around the edge and the blue frosting lettering which read: "Happy Birthday, Gerald, 6; Duane, 4, Dickey Lee, 2."
