Kenyon, Elliott Harlow (24 January 1920 - 5 March 2009) With Flag

Elliott H. Kenyon, age 89, passed away on March 5, 2009, at 11:20 a.m. at his home at Ione, WA. Elliott Harlow Kenyon was born on January 24, 1920, at Bismarck, North Dakota, to Frank W. and Goldie D. (Jensen) Kenyon. He received his education in a country school near his grandparent’s ranch near Killdeer, North Dakota, and also at Caldwell, Idaho and Houston, Texas. He spent some years on the ranch in North Dakota and also worked with his father in Michigan in a store as a young lad.

He served his country in WWII, having enlisted on October 11, 1940, at Fort MacArthur, California. He served as chauffeur for Colonel Clark and General Stilwell at Presidio Monterey, CA and then served in Seward, Hope, and the Aleutian Islands, with the Alaskan Defense Command in Alaska, and was there at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In 1944, he went to Fort Leonard Wood, MO then being sent over to Europe, leaving New York on the Mariposa and arrived in Marseilles, France, on December 10, 1944. He served in France and Germany, serving in Co. C. 1st Battalion 274th Infantry Regiment, of the 70th Infantry with the Trailblazers, as a machine-gunner on the front lines. He was hit by shrapnel twice at Phillipsburg, sent for medical treatment, but never received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on July 8, 1945 at Camp Beale, California.

While in the service in the Army, he earned the Army Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, American Defense Service Medal with Foreign Service Clasp, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars (Ardennes-Alsace Campaign, Rhineland Campaign and Central Europe Campaign), American Campaign Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and WWII Victory Medal; also, the Bronze Star Medal.

Elliott had various occupations throughout his lifetime, but mainly he was a general contractor, carpenter, plumber and big equipment operator, so had lived in several states and retired at Ione, WA.

He was married to Rena Belle (Eldredge) Paul and four children were born to them and they later divorced. Then married to Dorcas (Orbeck) Hamel for two years and they divorced. Then married to Carol (Conklin) Manville and they had two sons, and they divorced. At the time of his death, he is survived by his wife, Dolores (Mohr) (Novak) Kenyon, whom he had married on December 23, 1974, at Black River Falls, WI. There are no children from this marriage.

Elliott is survived by his wife, Dolores of 34 years; six children, Kelly (Nancy) Kenyon of Oklahoma City, OK; Kathy (Gary) Holm, of Moses Lake, WA; Keith (Celia) Kenyon, of Miami, AZ; Kay (Danny Munds) Kenyon of Colville, WA; Adam Kenyon and Aaron (Salina) Kenyon both of Coeur d’Alene, ID. He is further survived by grandchildren: Bambi Lorette, Bradley (Lynn) Kenyon, Brandi Kenyon, Christopher Holm, Tammy (David) Dennis, Keith (Monica) Kenyon, Rose Marie Cooper, Nicholas, David, Tyler and Diane Kenyon, Kristen Kenyon, David Hardt, Aaron A Kenyon, Liam, Loraina, Gabriel and Conlan Kenyon; and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are: three step-children Barbara (Richard) Ofte, Robert Novak, both of Black River Falls, WI, and Thomas (Sarah) Novak of Alma Center, WI. There are other surviving step-children and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is further survived by one sister, Elaine Freer, of McKinleyville, CA. and one brother, Adrian Kenyon of Torrance, CA; his mother-in-law, Luella Mohr of Neillsville, WI, and several brother-in-laws: Donald I. Mendenhall, of Bouse, AZ, Harvey (Susannah) Mohr, Plymouth, WI, Kenneth (Karen) Mohr, Marvin Mohr, Allen (Debra) Mohr, David (Sharon) Mohr, Paul (Nancy) Mohr, all of Neillsville, WI, Lawrence Artac of Willard, WI and sister-in-laws: Edna (Bruce) Klatt, Alma Center, WI and Ruth (Robert) Schmidt of Neillsville.

Elliott was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Goldie Kenyon, his first wife, Rena Belle Creary; a brother and sister-in-law, Everett (Thelma) Kenyon; brother-in-law, John G. Freer; sister-in-law, Gloria Kenyon; daughter-in-law, Alishia Kenyon; father-in-law, Albert Mohr; sisters-in-law, Lois Mendenhall, Eunice Artac, and Patricia Mohr.

A Memorial service was held in Ione on Sunday March 8, 2009, with Chaplain, Julius Gage in charge; and a Military Memorial will be held in June 2009.

Rest in Peace Grandpa Kenyon. I wish I could be there for the family. Everyone is in my thoughts and prayers. I will try my hardest to come up in June. I love and miss you all dearly.
