Gierl, John (18 Apr. 1875 - 9 Sept. 1940)

Funeral services for John Gierl, 65, who died Monday afternoon were held this morning at 9 o’clock at St. Mary’s Catholic church. Internment followed there in the parish cemetery. The pall bearers were: C. J. Kraus, Ed Dehne, William Young, August Schoelzel, Herman Wiedenhoeft and Emil Fleischauer. Those who had charge of the floral tributes were the Misses Helen Gierl, Rosemary Gierl, Jane Lukowicz and Virginia Kriplean.

John Gierl was born April 18, 1875, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the age of two he came with his parents to Colby, Wis. He was one of 13 children. When he grew to manhood he was employed as lumberman, tavernkeeper, truck driver. When the division point of the Soo Line was here he was employed by the railroad company to service the engines between trains. He was unmarried and made his home while in Abbotsford at the Thompson Hotel.

The past seven years he made his home in Athens with his brother, Albert, where he died Monday afternoon at four o’clock as the result of a heart ailment.

He is survived by seven brothers and four sisters: Robert, Abbotsford; Joe and Albert, Athens; Louis, Ernest, George, Killian, at home at Colby; Mrs. Charles Seaberry, Mellen; Mrs. John Dietrich, Milwaukee; Mrs. Ida Lukowicz and Mrs. Hugo Dhein, Colby, Wis.
