Kass, Emma (10 JUL 1861 - 28 JAN 1950)

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church for Mrs. Mathias Kass, who died Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Kleckner, Neillsville (Clark Co., Wis.).

Interment was at St. Bernard’s Cemetery.

Mrs. Emma Kass, a long time resident of Thorp, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Kleckner at Neillsville, Wis., Saturday morning, Jan. 28, 1950, after a short illness.

Mrs. Kass, formerly Emma Spehn, was born July 10, 1861, at Bohri Valley, Wis., and was united in marriage to Mathias Kass at Winona, Minn. They resided there until 1890 when they moved to a farm at Eidsvold (Clark Co.), Wis. After spending many years on the farm, they moved to Thorp in 1913.

Mrs. Kass was preceded by a daughter Mildred and her husband, who passed away on Jan. 28, 1927, exactly 23 years ago to the day. She is survived by one son and seven daughters: Alfred Kass of Thorp; Mary, Mrs. Alfred Kleckner of Neillsville; Mrs. Laura Junemann of Stratford; Mrs. Mable Mason of Chippewa Falls; Florence, Mrs. John Miller of Duluth, Minn.; Irene, Mrs. Ed Junemann of Stratford; Vera, Mrs. Walter Boelter of Thorp; and Caroline, Mrs. Clem Burdick of Wauwatosa, Wis. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. James Kern, Sr. of Stanley, and Mrs. Rudolph Risser of Winona, Minn., as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The body lay in state at the home of Mrs. Walter Boelter from Monday noon until the time of the funeral which was held Tuesday morning at 9:30 in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Rev. A. M. Muckerheide officiating, with interment in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. The deceased was a member of the Christian Mothers’ Society which attended the funeral in a body.

Serving as pallbearers were: George Haas, Jos. Haas, Ed Decker, Ed Schmidt, Jos. Reichert and Louis Gruszynski.

In addition to all the out of town children, the following attended the services: Mr. and Mrs. Severn Kern, Yellow River, Mr. and Mrs. James Kern, Stanley, Mrs. James Kern, Sr., Stanley, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Duckert, Eau Claire, Mr. and Mrs. William Thomas and David of Medford, Wis.

Emma Spehn Kass was my great great grandmother on my (surviving) paternal grandmother's side. I am appreciative that you are making these archived paper entries available to the general public via the web!
