Karlen, Edward Sr. (30 MAY 1863 - 7 MAR 1948)

Edward Karlen Sr. passed away at the home of his son Edward Jr., near Stanley, of the infirmities of old age, on Sunday, March 7, 1948. He had reached the age of 84 years, 9 months and 7 days.

The deceased was born in Boltigen Counten, Berne, Switzerland, on May 30, 1863. He came to America in March 1882 and on April 25, 1895 was united in marriage to Miss Lois Bilange at Monroe, Wis.

Mr. Karlen became engaged in cheese making upon arrival in America. He came to Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) in 1896 and settled on a farm northwest of here and also made Swiss cheese, being one of the first Swiss cheese makers in this part of the country. He retired from the farm in 1937 and moved to Boyceville, Wis. Upon the death of Mrs. Karlen on April 28, 1942, he lived with and divided his time with his children.

He is survived by three sons, Ernest of Decatur, Indiana, Edward Jr. of Stanley and Herman of Thorp; one daughter, Lena, Mrs. August Schutz of Boyceville; one brother Jacob and one sister Katie of New York, eighteen grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. M. Midtlien of Stanley, at the Thorp Methodist Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, with interment in the East Thorp Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ed Beller, Alfred Burkhardt, John Deutschlander, Mike Ramer, Gust Yahn and Vern Peet.
