Bast, Mary (28 February 1859 - 2 March 1949)

Mrs. Mary Bast, 90, died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Frantz, March 2, (1949) at 2:45 p.m.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 5, at 8:30 at the Georgas Funeral Home and 9 o’clock from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. A rosary service was held at the funeral home Friday evening. Fr. John J. Pritzl officiated, and burial was made in the Hillside Cemetery at Marshfield.

Mary Salchert was born February 28, 1859, in Calumet County. She received her education there and on February 19, 1884, she was married to Joseph Bast at Appleton.

They settled in Marshfield, where they lived for 20 years, Mr. Bast operating the Marshfield Bottling Works.

They then moved to Neillsville for a few years and operated the bakery. Later they located in Arcadia, where they operated a bakery for a few years. They returned to Neillsville, operating the bakery here until Mr. Bast’s death in 1929.

Mrs. Bast has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ben Frantz, for the past several years. She was taken ill four days before her death. She celebrated her 90th birthday, February 28.

She was a member of the Christian Mothers Society and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Bast is survived by three children: Mrs. Ben (Estelle) Frantz, Edwin Bast of West Bend, and John Bast of Eau Claire. Nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, a brother, Phillip Salchert of Sheboygan, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Conroy and Mrs. Fred Lutz, both of Appleton, also survive.

Mr. Bast preceded her in death on October 27, 1929. Three children, Norbert, Louisa and Marcellus and 13 brothers and sisters are deceased.

Pallbearers were: Linus Prock, Joe Zilk, Sr., Nolie Blau, Nick Linster, Henry Langreck and Frank Reinhard.

Relatives and friends from out-of-town attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Frantz, Fennimore; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Bast, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bast, West Bend; Mrs. Kathleen Belair, Marinette; Mr. and Mrs. John Bast and daughter, Audrey, Eau Claire; Mr. and Mrs. John Bast, Jr., Racine; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kronser, Appleton; Mrs. Rose Bast, Milwaukee; Gordon Frantz, Waukesha; Joe Frantz, South Ridge, Mass.; and Mr. and Mrs. Matt Scherer of La Crosse.
