Shummel, Emma (4 January 1867 - 5 September 1948)

Mrs. George (Emma) Shummel, 81, of Neillsville, died Sunday, September 5, 1948, at 4:25 p.m. at the farm home of her daughter, Mrs. Bruce Armitage.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 8, at the Georgas Funeral Home, the Rev. Virgil Nulton officiating. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery.

Mrs. Shummel was born Emma Darling, daughter of Abner and Fannie Fuller Darling, in Monroe January 4, 1867. She came to Clark County at the age of three with her parents, who bought a farm east of the city. She received her education in rural schools. In 1886 she married George Shummel in Neillsville. They farmed for many years at the east edge of town.

Mrs. Shummel was the last of the Charter members of the R. N. A., and the W. R. C. Her husband died May 30, 1926.

Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. August (Ethel) Wittke, Neillsville; Mrs. Henry (Grace) Wittke, Neillsville; Mrs. Bruce (Nellie) Armitage, Neillsville; and Mrs. Asa (Blanche) Darling, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Mrs. George (Emma) Shummel, who died September 5, were solemnized September 8 at the Georgas Funeral Home, the Rev. Virgil Nulton officiating. Interment was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Ole Botnen, Burton Wells, Alvin Wendt, Lyle Armitage, Irvin Fischer and Warren Medicke.

Miss Donna Bush and Miss Hazel Millard offered two vocal selections, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden." They were accompanied by Mrs. Florence Counsell.

From out-of-town came Mr. and Mrs. Asa Darling, and Elsa Dueioel of Milwaukee, (Mrs. Darling is a daughter of the deceased); Mr. and Mrs. Bud Wittke of Black River Falls; Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Payne of Rochester, Minn.; Mrs. L. G. Anderson, Myron Nickels, August Ehlert, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Smith, Mrs. Fannie Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Strey, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Lyon and son, all of Loyal; Mrs. Lee Smith of Fifield; Mrs. Della Iffland of Fairchild; David Nickels and Mrs. Oswald Henninger of Granton.
