Markwardt, Evelyn (Marriage - 13 June 1948)

Tall tapers lined the aisles of the Congregational Church Sunday evening as Evelyn Markwardt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Markwardt, Neillsville, repeated nuptial vows with Keith Lea, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Lea, Amherst. The Rev. Samuel D. Robbins read the ceremony. The soloist, Miss Marianne Simonson, Wausau, a sorority sister of the bride, sang, "O Promise Me" and "The Lord’s prayer."

Presented in marriage by her father, the bride wore an entrained gown of white summer satin, detailed with a bertha, a fitted bodice, and panniers at the hipline. Baby gardenias held her two-tiered fingertip veil of imported illusion. She carried a crescent bouquet of gardenias, surrounded by gladiola flowerettes and larkspur.

The attendants’ dresses of paper taffeta were fashioned after the bride’s dress. The maid-of-honor, Miss Joyce Rathe, Evanston, Ill., a sorority sister, was gowned in white, and Miss Nelda Dopp, Wild Rose, also a sorority sister, in ice blue. They carried muffs of pink Pinocchio roses and gladiola flowerettes. Also gowned in blue and wearing corsages of Pinocchio roses were Miss Patricia Thorpe, Auburndale, a sorority sister and Miss Marion Appleyard, Neillsville, a cousin of the bride who were usherettes.

Gerald Lea, the groom’s brother, was bestman. Serving as groomsman was William Feigleson, Stevens Point.

Later, at the home of the bride’s parents, the young couple greeted 60 guests. Miss Patricia Thorpe presided at the buffet table. After the reception the couple left on a wedding trip of unannounced destination. After June 26 they will reside at Escanaba, Mich.

Mrs. Lea graduated from Central State Teachers’ College and is a member of Tau Gamma Beta sorority. Her husband, also a graduate of Central State, is employed as a representative of a Milwaukee newspaper.
